This war might be about oil after all......

My point is LONG before oil actually becomes scarce, it will become extremely expensive. OK maybe I'm wrong about $2.50/gallon being the signal to use alternate sources, maybe it's really $3.00/gallon. But that price will be hit before we're in danger of running out and economics will FORCE changes to alternate sources. Materials that use less oil will become relatively cheaper, cars that run on other fuels will save money, etc.

I tend to agree with LanD. History is replete with Chicken Littles. And again, I hate to say it, but this is where we need the greedy exploitative robber baron capitalist bastards. Shell, ExxonMobil, BP...they're not gonna just sit around and watch the well run dry. To paraphrase Dennis Miller, alternative energy sources will be the wave of the future, once some oil company can get a price-gouging monopoly out of them.

Trust me GL, not everyone who drives an SUV is affluent enough to afford it. I think you would be amazed at the number of SUV drivers who are leasing that vehicle for 5-6 years, or are paying $600+ per month for it.

Not everyone who has stuff can afford it.

If I have money or not, you will never see me paying 600 dollars for car a month.... no matter if I win the damn powerball. Getr a new Monte Carlo or a Malibu, don't need no damn H2. Those things are so damn big

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I know there's a lot of truth in what you say Jumper. But here in Florida, very affluent people who live in $2 million homes and drive SUVs are the rule rather than the exception.

Perhaps I should clarify my statement a bit further. When I say oil will be come scarce, I mean that it will be come expensive. When prices hit $3, $4, $5 or more for a gallon of gasoline, what then?

Alternative sources will most likely be found although I don't have the faith y'all do in our ability to mass produce whatever it is on a scale large enough to matter, BUT it WILL change our lives. When oil hits $60-$100 a barrel, life as we know it will change. To what, I have no idea.

The $64,000 question is when?
